Not all genres are equal when it comes to battery. After testing dozens of games on the same phone, some clear patterns show up, and they're worth knowing before a flight or a long day out.

Real-time strategy and 3D racing are the hungriest — lots of moving objects, particle effects and constant screen changes. Expect to lose a real chunk of charge in an hour, especially at high settings.

On the gentle end are turn-based games, minimalist adventures and cosy sims. Muted colour palettes and static scenes cost almost nothing, which is why a game like a quiet exploration title can run for ages.

Casual games sit in the middle and depend entirely on their effects. A bright, animated one can surprise you, but capping the frame rate usually tames it. When in doubt, check for a battery-saver or 'low' graphics option — it's often hidden two menus deep.
